Case Study | Real-time Eathquake Monitoring in Yunnan, China

Recently, our company has collaborated extensively with the Yunnan Provincial Earthquake Administration and the University of Science and Technology of China to conduct mobile array observations using 4G node seismometers in several key monitoring areas of Yunnan Province. Yunnan Province is located at the boundary of the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates, characterized by complex geological structures and frequent seismic activity. Since the first half of this year, several earthquakes above magnitude 4.0 have occurred in areas such as Eryuan, Yingjiang, and Ludian, placing high demands on the monitoring capabilities and technologies of the local seismic network. This operation utilized our company's intelligent node seismometer equipment, UGL-3C, for data acquisition. The data was uploaded to the server via a 4G network for real-time processing.  Monitored seismic events can be viewed in real-time on a web interface, including location results and event waveforms. This effectively enhanced the local earthquake monitoring capabilities and response speed, providing new technical support for further optimizing disaster prevention capabilities in the region, deepening the exploration of regional seismic tectonic environments, and strengthening earthquake monitoring in key areas.

Traditional broadband seismic stations, while highly accurate, suffer from high costs and difficult deployment, severely limiting their density and making it challenging to meet local seismic monitoring needs. Our company's independently developed 4G intelligent node seismograph, the UGL-3C device, boasts portability, flexibility, and low power consumption, making it easy to deploy on a large scale and serving as an excellent complement to existing observation networks. Previously, our UGL-3C device has been successfully applied in several local projects, such as aftershock monitoring of the Yangbi earthquake and long-term monitoring of the Baihetan Reservoir, receiving high praise from relevant organizations for its monitoring capabilities and effectiveness.  Based on this prior success, this collaboration is expanding to a larger scale and deeper level. This project involves real-time monitoring using mobile seismic arrays in multiple different regions, including Eryuan, Ludian, Jinggu, Tengchong, and Shangri-La. This represents a further large-scale deployment and application of this mature technology system, aiming to achieve detailed characterization of underground structures and microseismic activity in key areas by constructing a high-density, wide-area real-time monitoring array.

With the advancement of nodal seismometer technology, high-precision, intelligent seismic monitoring solutions based on dense mobile observation arrays have been widely applied and developed. This technology can be used not only for natural earthquake monitoring but has also shown immense application potential in areas such as urban underground space exploration and mine safety monitoring.
